Notes for engineering leaders on healthy teams, lasting change and leading in complex systems
I’m Ahmed Avais. For more than 25 years I’ve been learning how systems behave and how to help them change. The systems started out as machines, became teams, and today they’re teams working alongside AI.
I began as an engineer, running networks and then mission-critical infrastructure. In 2008 I started Agile 7, and for the next decade I coached teams and leaders in finance, healthcare and technology, sometimes across more than 200 teams. Today I lead teams that build with AI every day. My teams do the work, and my part is to create the conditions for it: the practices, feedback loops and trust that let them do it well.
What you’ll find here
Notes on what I’m learning: the conditions that shape a team, how work flows, what changes when teams build with AI, and small practices that help people work well together. Some posts come with a small interactive toy, so you can watch a pattern play out and try one small change.
You won’t find a method to install. No single method fits every context, so I start where a team is, ask questions rather than prescribe, and try to help you see your own system so you can find your own path.
A new post goes out on Saturday mornings. If you’re new, start here.
How I write
I write with AI the way I lead teams that build with it. The ideas, stories and judgment come from 25 years of my own work. I draft with an AI writing partner, then shape, cut and correct until it says what I mean. I don’t hide it, any more than I’d hide using a calculator. AI is here to assist people, not replace them, and how we work well together is what I write about.
Compare notes
If something here matches what you see in your team, reply to any post or find me on LinkedIn. I’d like to compare notes. Stories from teams I’ve worked with are at agile-7.com, and the toys live at ahmedavais.com.
